A few readers have mentioned that St Louis is on the west bank of the Mississippi River, where I have it on the east bank. I based the beginning of Ella’s story on the east bank, in what is now East St Louis, but to make things clearer I’ve now changed Chesterfield to old Illinois Town although almost everything else stays the same. Thanks to all those readers for their suggestions. Really appreciate it.
